Yes I have used this many times and your idea was exactly the rght approach, just a slight change to the syntax:

IF an_desc = "" THEN ad_sort ELSE  an_desc

(no END needed, nor even a terminator like . becuase the browse handles all this for you)

Thanks for the response.

It must be that the value of an_desc doesn't equal blank (""); it's a real shame.

I'm afraid that one didn't work, I'm not sure if there's some other connector or something going on.

Thanks for the assist though; if anyone else has any ideas I'd love to hear them.
